Establishment of Xi-An House Missions

In 1997, after the church successfully repaid the $160,000 loan for the construction of its new hall on Zhangyi Road, a thanksgiving service was held to celebrate the milestone. Shortly thereafter, the leadership learned about an opportunity to purchase three adjoining shophouses on Geylang Lorong 25A. The owner was asking $1.2 million per unit and insisted on selling all three together. The proposal prompted significant discussion among the leadership committee, as there were several concerns.

First, the asking price was considered high, with a fair market value estimated at $800,000 to $900,000 per unit. Second, there was uncertainty about whether the properties could legally be used as a gathering space, as the Geylang area had not yet been approved for such use. Lastly, there was a risk that the government might acquire the area for redevelopment, given the large number of older buildings in the vicinity.

Despite these challenges, Elders Zhao Ziyi and Zheng Naitong strongly supported the purchase, arguing that if the properties were reasonably priced, developers would have already acquired them. They acknowledged that the concerns regarding usage and potential government acquisition couldn’t be resolved immediately, as such matters typically required legal consultation and approvals from seven government departments. After careful deliberation, the committee decided to move forward with the purchase.

Reconstruction of the site began in 2001, with total construction costs amounting to $2 million. By 2003, the new five-story building was completed and named Zion Building. Strategically located in the heart of Geylang, it is the only structure in the area to span two streets, with its front entrance facing Lorong 25 and the rear connecting to Lorong 25A. Over time, Zion Building has far exceeded its original investment in both value and utility, becoming a vital foundation for the church’s growth.

Today, Zion Building serves as the hub for Geylang Zion Church’s ministry. Every Sunday, the congregation gathers on the second floor for worship, while the third and fourth floors are used for Sunday school classes. The church hosts around 120 attendees weekly and runs various fellowship groups, including youth, young adult, and adult ministries. Under the leadership of Pastor Lin Junqun, the ministry continues to thrive, solidifying Zion Building’s role as a beacon of growth and faith within the Zion Mission network.
